Legoland Parks Worldwide: Billund Original, Best Rides by Age, and Tips for Families
In 1968, in the small Danish town of Billund, a theme park opened that had been built almost entirely from 45 million Lego bricks. It attracted 625,000 visitors in its first season, which was roughly the entire population of Denmark at the time divided by nine. More than fifty years later, Legoland has grown into a global franchise of ten parks across Europe, North America, and Asia, drawing a combined annual attendance of around 15 million visitors. For families travelling with children between the ages of roughly 2 and 12, Legoland consistently ranks among the most rewarding theme park choices in the world, not because it competes with Disney on scale or thrill but because it is sized correctly for younger children in ways that most large theme parks are not.
The Original: Legoland Billund, Denmark
Legoland Billund sits 1.5km from the Lego Group headquarters in Billund, a town of around 6,000 people in the Jutland peninsula of central Denmark. The park was the idea of Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, son of Lego founder Ole Kirk Christiansen, who saw an opportunity to display the company's products on a monumental scale. The original park opened on 7 June 1968 with a single centrepiece: Miniland, a 20-million-brick scale replica of famous world landmarks and Danish towns. Miniland has since grown to include more than 30 million bricks across representations of cities including Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Bergen, and sections styled after the American Wild West.
The park now covers approximately 140,000 square metres and contains around 58 rides and attractions across themed zones including Pirate Land, Knight's Kingdom, Duplo Land (for the youngest visitors), and the Lego Ninjago World zone. Key facts for planning:
- Season: Legoland Billund is seasonal, typically open from late March or early April through the end of October, with a Halloween-themed period and a Christmas market in November/December. It is not open year-round, unlike the California or Florida parks.
- Admission (2025): Adult tickets from approximately DKK 399 (around £29/$37) when booked online in advance. Children under 3 enter free. On-the-gate prices run 15-20% higher. Annual passes, called "Season Passes," start from DKK 849 per person and pay for themselves in two visits.
- Getting there: Billund has its own international airport (BLL), served by Ryanair, Norwegian, and other carriers from UK and European cities. The airport is literally 2km from the park entrance. Alternatively, fly to Aarhus or Copenhagen and rent a car; Billund is about 100km west of Aarhus and 260km west of Copenhagen.
- Staying nearby: The Legoland Hotel Billund sits inside the park grounds and allows hotel guests early entry before the general public. Room prices start around DKK 1,900 per night for a family room in high season. The Hotel Svanen across the road is a cheaper alternative at around DKK 1,200 per night.
What makes Billund worth the journey from outside Scandinavia is the combination of the park itself with the broader Billund experience. The Lego House, a 12,000-square-metre "home of the brick" experience centre that opened in Billund town centre in 2017, is a separate paid attraction (DKK 199 per person; children under 2 free) and is genuinely excellent for children and adults alike. Its centrepiece is a room filled with 25 million Lego bricks in open bins, sorted by colour, where visitors build freely for as long as they like. A Billund family trip can reasonably fill two and a half to three days between the park and the Lego House.
Legoland Windsor, United Kingdom
Legoland Windsor, located 35km west of London in Berkshire near Windsor Castle, is the second-oldest Legoland park, having opened in 1996 on the site of the former Windsor Safari Park. It is consistently among the top five most visited theme parks in the UK, with annual attendance typically between 1.8 million and 2 million visitors. For UK families, it is the most accessible Legoland option and for many families with children under 12 it is the most rewarding theme park day out in the country.
The park covers around 60 hectares and contains more than 55 rides and attractions. The Dragon roller coaster is the flagship thrill ride, with a height requirement of 90cm for accompanied children and 120cm to ride alone. The LEGO Mythica: World of Mythical Creatures zone, which opened in 2021 as a £37.5 million investment, added the Flying Theatre ride (among the first of its kind in a UK theme park) and is regarded as the most impressive recent addition to the park's offering. Miniland Windsor includes scale-model versions of London, Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Paris, and the Taj Mahal.
Admission prices in 2025 start from around £35 per person when booked online in advance. On-the-gate prices are typically £55-65. Annual passes start from around £95 and include access to other Merlin Entertainments attractions (Merlin, which owns Legoland, also operates Alton Towers, Thorpe Park, Chessington, and the Dungeons chain). The park operates year-round except for maintenance closures in January, though many attractions close during the winter months.
Legoland California, United States
Legoland California in Carlsbad, 50km north of San Diego, opened in 1999 and was the first Legoland park in North America. It operates year-round and is probably the most polished of the Legoland parks in terms of guest experience and park infrastructure. The San Diego climate means outdoor attractions are usable in every month of the year, which gives it a significant practical advantage over Billund (seasonal) and Windsor (cold, rainy winters).
The California park has evolved considerably since 1999 and now includes the separately ticketed Legoland Water Park (open seasonally) and the Sea Life Aquarium. Combined tickets for all three attractions are available. Highlights include the Ninjago ride (an interactive dark ride using infrared technology to let riders "throw" virtual weapons at targets), the Knights' Tournament ride, and the Miniland USA section, which contains scale-model recreations of New York, Washington DC, Las Vegas, New Orleans, and San Francisco using around 35 million bricks. Gate admission in 2025 is approximately $99-109 per person; pre-booked online tickets start from around $75.
Legoland Florida, United States
Legoland Florida in Winter Haven opened in 2011 on the site of the former Cypress Gardens, one of Florida's original theme parks (open 1936-2009). It is the largest Legoland park by area and retains the original Cypress Gardens botanical garden section, which is genuinely beautiful and unusual for a children's theme park. The Florida park includes the Legoland Water Park and has the advantage of being roughly 80km from Orlando, making it a feasible addition to a broader Florida theme park trip, though in character it is quite different from Disney World and Universal Studios.
Best Rides and Attractions by Age Group
Ages 2-5 (Duplo Zone and Gentle Rides)
Every Legoland park has a dedicated Duplo zone for the youngest visitors. The Duplo Express train, the Duplo Playtown, and the Duplo Splash Safari water play area (where available) are designed for children under 5 and their parents. At Billund, the Fire Brigade and Boatlift rides in the City Theme area are particularly popular with this age group. Plan for these zones to be the slowest part of your day and bring a change of clothes for water play areas.
Ages 6-9 (The Core Legoland Audience)
This is the age group Legoland is most precisely calibrated for. Interactive rides like the Ninjago ride (available at multiple parks), the Laser Raiders dark ride, and the driving school attractions (where children drive miniature electric cars on a road track and receive a Legoland driving licence at the end) are particularly successful with this group. Height requirements at most Legoland parks for the core attractions start at 90cm for accompanied rides and 100-110cm for solo, which most 6-year-olds comfortably meet.
Ages 10-12 (The Transition Age)
Children at the upper end of the Legoland target range are best served by the coasters and the park's most technically complex rides. At Windsor, the Dragon coaster and the LEGO Mythica Flying Theatre are strong options. At Billund, the Polar X-plorer and the Polar Explorer rides are the most thrilling in the park. At California, the Knights' Tournament centrifuge ride and the Project X roller coaster are the most intense options. For this age group, half a day at Legoland combined with the Lego-building areas (including Miniland) and shopping tends to be more satisfying than a full day.
Legoland Dubai and the Newer Parks
Legoland Dubai opened in 2016 as part of the Dubai Parks and Resorts complex in Jebel Ali, alongside Motiongate and Bollywood Parks. It is the first Legoland in the Middle East and operates year-round. The Dubai park is smaller than the European and American parks but benefits from excellent indoor air-conditioned areas given the climate. Combined tickets with the other Dubai Parks properties are available and often represent good value. Gate admission is approximately AED 295 (around £62/$79) per person.
Legoland Malaysia in Johor Bahru (a 25-minute drive from Singapore) opened in 2012 and was the first Legoland in Asia. It has since been joined by Legoland Japan in Nagoya (2017), Legoland Korea in Chuncheon (2022), and Legoland New York in Goshen (2021). The New York park is the newest in North America and is located about 90km northwest of Manhattan, making it a day-trip option from the city, though most families combine it with nearby accommodation.
Practical Planning Tips for Any Legoland Park
- Book online and in advance. Every Legoland park offers discounts of 15-30% for pre-booked tickets. Same-day gate prices are significantly higher and, during peak school holiday periods, the park may reach capacity.
- Arrive at opening. The parks fill quickly, and queues for the most popular rides double in length between 10am and noon. Arriving at opening (typically 10am) and heading directly for the headline attractions delivers a materially better experience than arriving at midday.
- Check height requirements before you go. Each park publishes ride height requirements on its website. Measure your children before travel and note which rides they can and cannot access. This prevents disappointment at the gate of specific attractions.
- Miniland is not optional. The Miniland areas at every park are genuinely impressive for adults and children and serve as a natural place to eat picnic food, rest, and decompress between queues. Budget at least 30-45 minutes here.
- The Lego stores at the park exit are expensive. Exclusive sets available only at Legoland parks are genuinely exclusive and worth buying as souvenirs if your budget allows. General sets available elsewhere are priced at full recommended retail and do not represent value compared to buying the same set on Amazon or at a toy shop.
- For Billund specifically: combine with Jutland. The Jutland peninsula offers far more than just Legoland. Viking history at Jelling, wild North Sea beaches at Blokus Strand, and the city of Aarhus (Denmark's second city, with the excellent ARoS art museum and the open-air Old Town) are all within easy driving distance. A family road trip through Jutland with Legoland as the anchor is one of Scandinavia's best underrated family holiday options.
Is Legoland Worth the Money Compared to Competitors?
The honest answer depends on your children's ages. For families with children aged 4-10, Legoland consistently outperforms parks with much higher ticket prices in terms of actual enjoyment. A 2023 survey by the UK consumer group Which? rated Legoland Windsor second among UK theme parks for overall family satisfaction, behind only Paultons Park (home of Peppa Pig World). For the specific age cohort that Legoland targets, that rating reflects a genuine truth: the park is designed with exceptional precision for children who are past the stroller stage but not yet ready for the extreme thrill rides of parks aimed at teenagers.
Disney parks offer more total content and a broader age range, but they cost significantly more (a family of four at Disneyland Paris will spend roughly £400-600 in gate admission alone at 2025 prices versus £120-160 at Legoland Windsor) and involve longer queues for the headline attractions. For families visiting Billund, the combination of the Legoland park, the Lego House, and a day or two exploring Jutland represents excellent value for a four to five day family break costing roughly equivalent to two days at a Disney resort in terms of entry costs and significantly less in accommodation.
The original Legoland in Billund remains the best of the parks for one simple reason: it has had fifty-five years to refine its offering, and it carries a genuine sense of origin and authenticity that newer parks lack. If you are going to visit exactly one Legoland in your life and the question is which one to choose, Billund, combined with the Lego House and a Danish road trip, is the answer.
